Arts community gathering

Arts, culture and creativity are already helping shape the future of the Queenstown Lakes District.

Today, the creative industries contribute more than $234 million to the local economy and support thousands of jobs across the region. Festivals, cultural events and creative organisations enrich community life, attract visitors and help tell the stories of this place.

Yet while our district has grown rapidly, investment in dedicated arts and cultural infrastructure has not kept pace.

For decades, local artists, performers, festivals, educators and community organisations have built a vibrant cultural life across the Upper Clutha. Much of this activity continues to rely on temporary, shared or limited facilities, constraining opportunities for performance, participation, education and creative development.

Community consultation has consistently confirmed strong support for a dedicated arts and cultural facility, with 92% of respondents indicating they would attend events at a new venue.

Looking Ahead

What will we be proud of in 2036?

We believe the region can be recognised not only for its extraordinary landscapes, but also for the strength of its cultural life.

A place where artists have the spaces they need to create and collaborate. Where local stories are celebrated and shared. Where young people can discover their creative potential. And where people of all ages can connect, participate and belong.

The Wānaka Performing Arts Precinct is our response to that future.

More than a venue, it is intended to be a regional cultural anchor and creative ecosystem that supports the people, programmes and relationships that bring arts and culture to life.

An investment in creativity, community and culture. A legacy for generations to come.
